Every January organizations make resolutions and set themselves up for goal-driven success, or they at least try. According to a recent article from Business Insider, 80% of resolutions set in the first week of January fail by the second week of February. No matter how determined we may be, committing to goals that are out of reach is almost as pointless as not setting any goals at all.

With that said, do not be discouraged to set goals. If you are struggling to pinpoint exactly what your organization needs in order to be more successful in the new year, try creating a SWOT analysis. You can use this acronym to determine where you should begin plotting your next endeavors. To begin brainstorming, fold a sheet of paper into four even sections and fill in each as follows:

SWOT

Aim for at least four points in each section. This tool will help you get a better understanding of your organization as a whole. Having this information all in one place can make it easier to define and resolve current issues while capitalizing on the strong suits of  your organization.

Now that you have determined your organization’s needs, consider if your goals are SMART. “SMART” stands for Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Time-based. It’s a fool-proof checklist tool that enables organizations to measure results against strategy.

SMART

Goal Example: “I want to be rich”

SMART Goal Example: “I want to increase my income by 15% this year by earning that promotion. I will save money by sticking to a monthly budget.”

Once you’ve determined if your organization’s goals are “SMART”, you’ll be able to create a map of how you will accomplish your goals and determine the importance of each one. Talk with other team members and log your achievement progress periodically to ensure your time and resources are effectively utilized.

Best wishes from Jungle Lasers on your endeavors in 2018!
